So I’m sat at home minding my own business, earning around 3k a month simply from Adsense, it’s not that I have become complacent but that I have worked hard to build it to that level and expect a certain number when I check at the end of each week. This one day in mid November, my Adsense was about 50% of what I expect, I checked to see which site wasn’t pulling it’s weight and to my surprise it was actually my main money site.
This site is updated regularly (by me, which is rarely the case these days) and was number 1 for 3 lucrative keywords, and knocking around in the top 10 for a few more decent ones. I was really confident about the rankings of this site due to it actually rising in rankings on release of google panda, but then……l
I checked it’s rankings and to my utter shock it was at number 25 for the main keyword and had fallen from the first page for almost every keyword, I felt physically sick, what was wrong with my site? Was this my first taste of the google slap? All of these questions were running through my head so I did the standard emergency research (checked twitter for any algorithm updates) NOTHING!
I carried on building links and adding content as I believed that was the way I got ranked in the first place so it can’t do any harm now.
A few days later I found the first reference to my new enemy, google panda update 2.blahblahbullshit. My visitors from google pretty much dried up completely, luckily however there was a shit load of traffic coming form yahoo and bing, I knew they were good for something :).
Anyway, the panda had me by the balls, I was faced with an option, try to rescue my baby or give up and concentrate on my other projects, in truth I would have given up on this site if it weren’t the very first I ever made. So I dug in my heels, kept up building links and submitting my hand written content. Slowly but surely I nurtured the site back to page 1, first it went to 22 other 17 and so on until it finds itself at its current home at number 3. The only sites above it are the world leaders in this niche market, imagine you had a computer company, the 2 above me would be Microsoft and apple. So I can’t complain too much. I also have the added benefit of people in this niche not wanting to click on these 2 brands as they know they will try to sell them something. My site just innocently offers advice with a few well placed ads. Hehe.
If you read hard you will find a lesson in there somewhere, it goes something
like “don’t give up on your site, keep building links, diversify them a bit and keep adding quality content”.
The earnings are not up to the exact level that they were, but they are at a level that I’m not gonna complain about, I mean I pay 7 dollars a month for hosting and I am definitely earning that, even on a daily basis ;), the main thing I learned this month is that I was right when I made my decision not to put all of my eggs in one basket, imagine if that had been my only site, I’d be pissed off and poor right now, but I just bought an iPad (which I am writing this on as I am sat in the hospital), interesting how things turn out.
That’s one off my bucket list anyways, wrestle a bear – DONE!
Tell me about your experiences with this evil panda demon????
Love,
Dan
