Hi there,
My name is Dan, I have 5 loves in this world and they are (in no particular order):
- My macbook air
- Manchester United FC
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Women
- Making monehs
Penguins almost made this list by the way!
All of these things I do well so I am pretty much a happy guy at the moment.
I work as a marketing Officer at a worldwide telecoms company and in my spare time run my own marketing agency as well as do a lot of internet marketing and writing. Mostly about teaching guys to be good with women.
My marketing journey
The story of how I got into the marketing industry is an interesting and ridiculously entertaining one.
I was working from home as a freelance writer for loads of different blogs/ magazines/ newspapers, but had become disillusioned with the writing about stuff that I’m not interested in (which was 70% of the stuff I was doing).
So I began to look on Gumtree for a few jobs, I was really looking for a full time writing or editing gig but had not had any luck with any paid work, loads of people are happy to offer unpaid interships but I wanted some cash.
I saw a job advertised for a marketing officer, I figured “how hard can that be?” all I have to do is know what people want and then create stuff that will make them want to buy it. So I sent in my application (did I mention it was 6am? And I have had no sleep) so at 9 when I was just going to bed I get a call and they ask me to come in for an interview at mid-day, the place is only a 5 minute walk from my flat so I thought I’d have a few hours sleep and go to the interview.
It was then that they gave me a test to do before the interview, I had to read their website and write a summary of what it was about (geeky telecoms stuff). I busted it out, had a shower and went over to the interview.
Now at this point if you have read any of my other work, you know my personality and attitude!!! This is vital in getting the job, so I sit down in the waiting room and wait for my interview, after about 5 minutes some dude comes in and holds his hand out, so I stand up and shake his hand.
He then sits next to me and doesn’t say anything, so I start making fun of him (telling him to go home because the job is as good as mine because I’m the shit and could sell ice to the eskimos). After about 2 minutes of this, another guy walks over and invites me in for my interview.
I go and sit down and he tells me that the MD will be here in a minute to ask a few questions. When the guy walks in, who is it but the guy I was making fun of. The first thing that comes out of his mouth is, “hire this guy, I like him”.
I get the job there and then with no interview, with no marketing experience I might add.
I got the interview because I have an amazing CV that sells me perfectly, I got the job because I am an arrogant dick (sometimes) ☺
This job has made me kind of a geek, as part of it O have to the CMS for the companies secure website, this involved learning HTML as well as CSS (so I am now a guru in these areas, hahaha).
My IM journey
So, one of the sites I was writing for asked me to SEO my articles for them, at first I was like “WTF is SEO?”, I did some googling and find out and it doesn’t seem that difficult. I do it to my articles. Then they ask me to build some links to it, I again google it and find out, and go to build some links on high PR sites with relevant anchor text.
Within 2 weeks, my article is number 1 in google and bringing 6000 visitors a month to the site. At this point I think, well, that was easy I bet I could do that to my own site. So I did, I bought a domain and started to rank it in google, the same way I had learned how, however it was getting traffic but not making any cash.
So I started to look for resources and found Pat Flynn, from there I have never looked back, I started a site based on research and target some money with adsense, the site started raking in about £300 a month and I thought to myself, “if I had 10 of those I would earn 10 times that”.
I now have 7 niche sites, (I actually have 11 but only 7 earn money at the moment) that earn me a nice little income, from a mixture of adsense and amazon affiliates. I also have an authority site in the relationship niche that gets 40k visitors a month and I sell some of my own products on there.
Needless to say I am doing quite well, but a friend of mine (a guy I met at the start of my IM journey, who I kinda had a wingman relationship with, we basically helped each other to make our niche sites and used to talk most days and tell each other what was working and what wasn’t) said to me, why don’t I start a site to show people how well I have done and help them out. So erm…. here it is.
I didn’t get into IM for any great selfless reason, I wanted to earn money without working a full time job, and now I am at a place where I can afford to do that if I want to, however I enjoy my job and work because I want to, not because I need to, I am in the exact situation I wanted to be in when I started.
